Some random thoughts for The Lawyers' Movement

I'm glad CJ Iftikhar knocked some sense into the hot-heads in the lawyers march committee. He had to be the one to say that "This is a movement for Rule of Law" and not for a person. Though this particular person (CJ Iftikhar M. Ch.) represents, IMO, the movement by being the lightening rod for the movement to come together.

The movement needs more than just demands to restore the CJ. The movement needs to have concrete proposals in the form of 'nukaat' which should make the core of the demands of the lawyers' movement.

To expect the CJ to fix every issue once he is restored is to again put our eggs in one personal basket. There should be concrete proposals/demands to be met by government in the form of legislation. These demands should supplant the wishy/washy demand of "cheef justice ko bahal karo"

The sleazy politicians will try to weasle out of fixing the system once IMC is restored. It is the system of independent Judiciary which is the real threat to the FeudoCracy that rules our hapless nation.

IMC just "happened to be" some judge "who said NO!", for every IMC there are 10 Dogars and Hakims waiting to svck some serious d!ck for the right price.

To invest our wishes and hopes for a better Pakistan in the arbitrary (and occasionally capricious) whims of a judge AGAIN is naive (fvcking stupid actually) in the extreme!

So, we need a set of concrete demands -- which can be implemented as bills -- at the core of the "Lawyers' Movement for Rule of Law" along with the general demand of restoration of CJ.

Otherwise, there will be another 9th march and we'll still be bitching and moaning about yet another promise not kept by yet another idiot politician who will protest wholeheartedly that he's stuck to the promise he made 'literally'.

Good Riddance!

"Few people will mourn the departure of the 43rd president"

The Economist's Devastating parting shot to Bushy...

"Frat Boy Moves Out!"

A president who believed that America’s global supremacy was guaranteed by America’s unrivalled military power ended up demonstrating the limits of both. Many of America’s closest allies in Europe refused to co-operate with the Iraq war. Many of America’s rivals used America’s travails in Iraq to extend their power: Iran is more powerful than it was in 2000, and closer to acquiring a nuclear bomb; Russia and China have extended their web of alliances and strengthened their regional influence. Mr Bush’s recalibration of his policies in his second term suggests that even he recognises that America’s loss of soft power has cost it dear.

The American military machine is under intense strain. The demands of tackling the Iraq insurgency have forced America to short-change Afghanistan. Deployments have grown longer and redeployments more frequent. Recruitment standards are going down. The neoconservative dream of a muscle-bound America knocking down the “axis of evil” and planting democracies from North Korea to Iran looks, more than ever, like an overheated fantasy cooked up in a think-tank.

Also,

Mr Bush relied heavily on a small inner core of advisers. The most important of these was Dick Cheney, who quickly became the most powerful vice-president in American history. Mr Cheney used his mastery of bureaucracy to fill the administration with his protégés and to control the flow of information to the president. He pushed Mr Bush forcefully to the right on everything from global warming to the invasion of Iraq; he also fought ruthlessly to expand the power of the executive branch, which he thought had been dangerously restricted since Watergate.

The two other decisive figures were Karl Rove, Mr Bush’s longtime political guru, and Donald Rumsfeld, his defence secretary. Mr Rove was obsessed by pursuing his dream of a rolling Republican realignment, subordinating everything to party politics. Mr Rumsfeld regarded the Iraq war not, like his boss, as an exercise in democracy-building, but as an opportunity to test the model of an “agile military” that he was pioneering at the Pentagon.

The fruit of all this can be seen in the three most notable characteristics of the Bush presidency: partisanship, politicisation and incompetence. Mr Bush was the most partisan president in living memory. He was content to be president of half the country—a leader who fused his roles of head of state and leader of his party. He devoted his presidency to feeding the Republican coalition that elected him.

Pakistan on the Flight Path of American Power

Interview with Tariq Ali.

1. Pakistan was ruled initially by British Collaborators, they quickly became American Collaborators.
2. The US USED Pakistan for its own interes, (like a "condom")
3. The arranged marriage of Musharraf and Benazir ended in disaster for both parties involved.
4. Bhutto (the elder) FAILED to institute land reforms which led to his weakening.
5. Butto (the elder) was punished for his insistence on keeping the Nuclear Program by an american stooge general.
6. Pakistani elements were invovled in the Indian embassy bombing in Kabul.

Certainly worth the hour to watch this video (done october 2008 right before Mumbai)

Stop the Gaza Massacre!

Tariq Ali, Janurary 10th, 2009:

George Gallaway, January 10th, 2009:

Tariq Ali, January 8th, 2009:

Palestinian United Call for BDS against Israel | Global BDS Movement

Palestinian United Call for BDS against Israel | Global BDS Movement

One year after the historic Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) which found Israel's Wall built on occupied Palestinian territory to be illegal; Israel continues its construction of the colonial Wall with total disregard to the Court's decision. Thirty eight years into Israel's occupation of the Palestinian West Bank (including East Jerusalem), Gaza Strip and the Syrian Golan Heights, Israel continues to expand Jewish colonies. It has unilaterally annexed occupied East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights and is now de facto annexing large parts of the West Bank by means of the Wall. Israel is also preparing - in the shadow of its lanned redeployment from the Gaza Strip - to build and expand colonies in the West Bank. Fifty seven years fter the state of Israel was built mainly on land ethnically cleansed of its Palestinian owners, a majority of Palestinians are refugees, most of whom are stateless. Moreover, Israel's entrenched system of racial discrimination against its own Arab-Palestinian citizens remains intact.

In light of Israel's persistent violations of international law; and

Given that, since 1948, hundreds of UN resolutions have condemned Israel's colonial and discriminatory policies as illegal and called for immediate, adequate and effective remedies; and

Given that all forms of international intervention and peace-making have until now failed to convince or force Israel to comply with humanitarian law, to respect fundamental human rights and to end its occupation and oppression of the people of Palestine; and

In view of the fact that people of conscience in the international community have historically shouldered the moral responsibility to fight injustice, as exemplified in the struggle to abolish apartheid in South Africa through diverse forms of boycott, divestment and sanctions; and

Inspired by the struggle of South Africans against apartheid and in the spirit of international solidarity, moral consistency and resistance to injustice and oppression;

We, representatives of Palestinian civil society, call upon international civil society organizations and people of conscience all over the world to impose broad boycotts and implement divestment initiatives against Israel similar to those applied to South Africa in the apartheid era. We appeal to you to pressure your respective states to impose embargoes and sanctions against Israel. We also invite conscientious Israelis to support this Call, for the sake of justice and genuine peace.

These non-violent punitive measures should be maintained until Israel meets its obligation to recognize the Palestinian people's inalienable right to self-determination and fully complies with the precepts of international law by:

1. Ending its occupation and colonization of all Arab lands and dismantling the Wall;
2. Recognizing the fundamental rights of the Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel to full equality; and
3. Respecting, protecting and promoting the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties as stipulated in UN resolution 194.

Endorsed by:

The Palestinian political parties, unions, associations, coalitions and organizations below represent the three integral parts of the people of Palestine: Palestinian refugees, Palestinians under occupation and Palestinian citizens of Israel.
